Thin Line

Furniture Acne

After a disappointing 'no sale' shopping day I escaped into the mysterious and rather addictive voids of online shopping. The virtual shopping cart remained empty but I rediscovered another object of desire.

Suggestion #9

Noguchi table, 1944

Life wouldn't be complete without a Japanese classic. Black triangular shapes creating the optical illusion of lightness and floatation. And always remember: the joy of giving is priceless.

Renewal

Shelf system String

I am feeling the need for a new shelf system to replace my common example of furniture democracy. As I am a collector of heavy magazines, I am not quite sure yet which kind would suit my needs best? Any suggestions?

Lipstick

Isn't this image pairing symptomatic for Lynn & Horst? Traces of lipstick on a boy's shoulder. And a voluptuous lips sofa. I always loved this one. Soft kisses on your behind.

Tables

Top Alain Gilles, Big Table for Bonaldo
Bottom Diego Rivera, Table on a Cafe Terrace, 1915

I just love the fact that every element, every shape and every shade is aesthetically connected. The world consists of countless variations of beauty that can be divided into a few basic principles. It only needs something as profane as a table to decode reality.

Paradox

Furniture Maison Martin Margiela

The new Margiela interior range. The used and the useless. Trompe l’œil furniture and smudgy white painted surfaces. Good to know that spray-painting cheap vintage founds is all you need to live the off-white illusion of MMM luxury.

Carpet Ride

Design Wendy Plomp

Cardboard carpets, I have to say 'I die!'. So unpretentious, decent and adorably unpolished. I love the roughness and imagine it to be perfect in adding industrial coziness to my concrete floor phantasies.

PhotoBooth Your Entourage

Horst is a trendsetter. He set the trend of sausages: Weisswürstchen, Frankfurter Würstchen, dicke Würstchen, schlanke Würstchen. Now he recognized a new trend. Give it up for the PhotoBooth. I now PhotoBoothed parts of my apartment to follow this outstanding trend. And here my folks is the result:

Let There Be Light

Lamps made by:

I am addicted to nice lighting. Preferably a symbiosis of natural/industrial. I like the contrast of naked cables, organic shapes and skilfully constructed bulps. Definitely nice to have.

Beautiful Life

Divided sideboard Front Design

Backpack sofa Hella Jongerius

Now that I sold all the IKEA trash at ebay, I have space for new sleek design. My vitra stool installation is ready and waiting for new friends. Or maybe i just leave the space empty? I'll do a little Horst house tour soon, I promise. But I need good light and time. It's top on my to-do list.

Gimme #03

This stool by Alvar Aalto makes me feel warm cause it reminds me of a dear friend. I'm still in love with his white-tiled apartment and the super nice salad he made for me. Thanks again.

White Tile Fight

Gareth Pugh Spring/Summer 2009 vs. Zanotta Quaderna

I like both. But maybe the desk is a bit more practical. Cause I don't know if Horst could pull off that dress.

Helsinki Picks

Helsinki was calling. Unfortunately I didn't bring a sausage. But chocolate and the L&H city guide. So please enjoy.

Best Shop
Wunder
Laivurinrinne 1

The owner, Daniel Palillo, strikes with a crazy selection of upcoming brands such as KTZ, Back, Cassette Player and his own label. Step by for a gaze at the super cool staff.

Best Furniture Shop
artek
Eteläesplanadi 18

One thing is for sure. When I move, I will buy all my furniture at artek. No, not all. But at least a few pieces. The Alvar Aalto design is just made for me.

Best Vintage Design
Fasaani
Korkeavuorenkatu 5

Design classics that one normally adores in design exhibitions are available here to affordable prices. I fell in love with the used Aalto stools and a sofa. It was a little bit too big for my hand luggage though.

Best Second Hand
Play it again, Sam!
Rauhankatu 2

You need a silver glitter suit and high heels for your next drag performance? Or just some inspiration and a little bit fun? Well, then now you know where to go.

Best Concept Store
Helsinki 10
Eerikinkatu 3

This store carries well selected labels including Ann Demeulemeester, Raf Simons, Acne Jeans, Maison Martin Margiela and Junya Watanabe. And of course all the usual design kitsch.

Best Restaurant
Bali Hai
Iso Roobertinkatu 35

The Vegetable Skewer is one of the most fantastic dishes I enjoyed so far. The composition of sweet flavours combined with spicy tofu and creamy risotto made my day. The lacquered walls and wall decoration are worth a look as well.

Best Deli
Sis
Korkeavuorenkatu 6

All ecological and political correct food and little snacks are offered in this sleek and charming place right across the Helsinki Second Hand shop. I can recommend the homemade pastries and the hot chocolate to warm your soul.

Best Bar
Nolla
Fredrikinkatu 56

The wooden interior appeals to the eye. And the DJ at Thursday night really catched me with a fine mix of trashy 80s and contemporary tunes. But be aware of drunk flight attendants that pertinaciously try to pick you up.

So if you are planning to visit this pretty place in the future, give Horst a shout.

HorSTYLE Lesson No8

The contradiction of concrete and wood, of sleek and rough design inspired me for this new edition of HorSTYLE Lesson. After all the bright colors and extrordinary patterns, the return to minimalism. Easy, soft and quiet.
